Some bugginess
July 12th, 2006
As we wait for the 3rdparty.org domain to fully arrive at our new location, some bugs have already been discovered and are being addressed.
- The forums were misordered from the import of UBB data on July 3. (corrected)
- There is an issue with the Quorum login with some usernames, so the chat area may produce some non-functionality or even PHP errors. (in the process of being corrected)
- The wiki pages are not showing up when clicking on links (corrected, once 3rdparty.org resolves correctly)
Please try to post comments here that identify new problems. We’ll try to address them as quickly as we can.

An update on this (before I go and do other things for much of the day) …
The Quorum issues are due to two things:
1. There is a cookie being set in a lower path that is taking precedence over the correct cookie. this is only an issue if you try to log in under another username (i.e. An administrator account, and the member account). This shouldn’t be a situation many people will have, but if you encounter an “Incorrect Password” error trying to join a chat room, please clear you cookies, log in again and it should be fine.
2. The chat doesn’t like usernames with spaces, which applies to a number of members from our old system. As a result, anyone with a space in the username will likely get ejected from the chat. This will be corrected in the next 24 hours. Check back here for another update.

Another quick issue …
3. The checkbox on the login doesn’t really function as an option right now. I forgot to reconnect it when I was testing. So everybody is probably being “remembered” whether they check that or not. (I’d be interested to know if that is the case). This toggle will work again in the near future, though likely not until the weekend.

Items #1 and #2 above (chat cookie path and names with spaces) are both resolved, I believe. Feel free to use the chat now.
However, I’ll add another little bug to the mix:
4. Changing a password requires a log out and a login in to work again. If you modify your profile to change the password, the chat (and maybe the wiki and/or this blog, too) will still be recognizing the original password and thus will think you haven’t authenticated.
This new one will be corrected in the next few days.

Another bug …
5. The wiki is pretty useless at the moment due to a repeating index.php in the links being generated by the engine. I can’t fix that right now, but there is a cure. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to do so by morning.

#5 above is fixed. It was an issue not with the main wiki install, but rather the special extensions to create the customized recent/new pages content in the left sidebar.
So only #3 and #4 remain above.
Please report any other issues you find by posting a comment here.

We can add
6. Logins are not responding when switching between accounts.
Again, this isn’t a problem for most people because you will only have one account to deal with, but it does indicate that the integration between these four channels is not completely connected. Unless this is causing more widespread general problems for others — and please post a comment here, or email kmakice -@- 3rdparty.org with some details, if you can’t log in at all — this will be a low-priority item.

A minor naming problem was found in the Quorum chat rooms, where pre-defined rooms (like “Information Desk”) were being created as new public rooms. The underscores in the names were removed, and everything should be fine again.

On second look … The room name problem is fixed, but the glitch preventing members with a space in their username from logging on is not fixed. I’ll look into this and all the above this weekend. so,
7. Members with spaces cannot log into the quorum

OK. #7 is fixed. Took a long time. All users should be able to use the chats.
Still need to address #3, #4 and #6

Related to #7 (and still causing some problems for certain users) is
8. Cookies are not always overwritten.
This is causing some issues for people who recently changed their password. If you experience problems, particularly in accessing the Quorum chat rooms, please:
* Click edit profile
* Change your password
* log out
* log in with new password
That sequence does clear the cookies correctly, and can be a workaround when you experience access issues.

A new bug has been uncovered (thanks jherty for sticking with me as we poked and prodded around the site) where imported and new members of the site who had not previously used the wiki are not being recognized as valid users there. This is not a cookie issue, but one on the database side.
I’m hoping to resolve that sometime in the next 24 hours.

The bug is an issue that seems to affect only certain accounts (people who have not used the wiki before) using Internet Explorer. And then only sometimes. Very strange.
Workaround suggestions:
A) Completely delete all 3rdparty.org cookies … log in … change your password in your profile … logout … log back in
B) Try Firefox or another non-IE browser and see if the problem goes away
Not anywhere close to ideal, but one of the major technical items on the agenda now is to replace the cobbled-together authentication with a new single-entry system that plays will with all of the channel apps and with/without cookies.

Clearly, the front page recent activity query needs to account for all the many posts in a given chat or not prune how many records are viewed. Our community chat tonight wiped the recent activity from the page.
That’s something I can fix pretty quickly, when I get a chance.

The home page, recent changes and RSS feed have all been updated to reflect a more limiting query for the chat rooms. We lose the reference to the last poster, but added a count on how many posts have been made to that room.
Also, the chat rooms have been configured to list posts in chronological order, from top to bottom, and include up to 1000 posts in the history. Any user should be able to save a copy of whatever messages remain in a room by entering “/save” in the message input field.

Our ISP located the place where the redirection was kicking us back to ‘www.3rdparty.org’ whenever possible. That has been corrected, so edits in the wiki are now possible without having to mess manually with the URL or lose cookie connections.
