Newspaper outs FL Gov nominee Crist; and 34 new independent polls

October 24th, 2006

WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE.

FLORIDA: NEWSPAPER SEEMINGLY OUTS CRIST AND NAMES NAMES.
Everyone saw this story coming in the Florida Governor's race -- especially in the wake of the Foley page scandal and Attorney General Charlie Crist's recent use of targeted anti-gay rights messages aimed at GOP voters -- but it is finally in print. In fact, even Crist told the reporter it was "fair" for the media to ask questions about his sexuality in light of issues raised in the campaign. Crist even goes so far as to answer that he has "never" had sex with a man. Now, before I give you the link, what is odd about the entire story are the wildly inconsistent denials from everyone involved (and who they are) which seem to make the story all the more credible. Click here to read the New Times story and decide for yourself whether or not you believe Crist is telling the truth or lying in his denial of being gay. Before you shrug this story and source off as insignificant, you should note reporter Bob Norman -- who wrote this controversial article -- was the same New Times reporter who in 2003 first outed Mark Foley and prompted Foley's prompt exit from the 2004 US Senate race (after, of course, an enraged Foley bashed Norman's article at a press conference). Give this story a few more days to reach the mainstream media and gain some traction, but these New Times allegations will likely become an issue that Crist will soon be forced to deal with on a daily basis. Meanwhile, in related news, Reform gubernatorial nominee Max Linn -- who gay-baited Crist on radio shows in recent weeks with "Charlie, come out, come out from wherever you are" -- was barred from the gubernatorial debate by a state appellate court order issued just two hours before the first televised debate started. Just yesterday Linn won the right through a lawsuit to participate in the debate.
