NEVADA: DAILY SCANDAL-RAMA UPDATE.
Congressman Jim Gibbons — the GOP nominee for Nevada Governor — was apparently involved in an alcohol-related altercation with a female last week. According to the Las Vegas Sun, single-mom Chrissy Mazzeo called 9-1-1 three-times in quick succession and “told police that Gibbons grabbed her arms and tried to force himself on her late Friday in a parking garage near a restaurant where she had been drinking with a friend, the Congressman and his top adviser.” Both Mazzeo and Gibbons told police they had been drinking. An independent witness — a waitress in the restaurant — said Gibbons and his guests were “flirty.” Mazzeo said Gibbons began “playing footsie” with her under the table and put his hand on her leg. Gibbons also denied that allegation, telling the police: “At some point I am sure my leg bumped hers. But it was not flirtatious.” Mazzeo also accused Gibbons of trying to sexually force himself on her in the parking lot. According to Gibbons, he was walking Mazzeo to her car when he “helped her catch her balance after she tripped.” The Sun reported “Mazzeo dropped the complaint the next day and told police she did not want to start a media circus. She did not recant the allegations or say she lied. She also told police she was not pressured to withdraw the complaint. When asked about her change of mind, she said it was ‘because of who he is. I just don’t want to go up against that’” A spokesman for the Las Vegas Police Department said the matter was dropped because it was a he-said/shesaid situation with no independent witnesses or other evidence to show what really happened. Gibbons has been married for 20 years to State Assemblywoman Dawn Gibbons, who lost the GOP primary this year for her husband’s congressional seat.

FREE SPEECH ZONE.
I was a panelist on blogs at a Thursday evening event sponsored by the South Florida Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. One of my fellow panelists — blogger Bob Norman of New Times — gave a great answer to one question about the so-called “need for balance” in news stories. “Balance is bullshit,” Bob loudly exclaimed, saying his only concerns were “reporting the truth” and “being fair.” Amen!
