OHIO: RNC CONFIRMS THEY PULLED THE PLUG ON DeWINE.
Remember just a week ago when the New York Times reported that the Republican National Committee cancelled millions of dollars in ad buys on behalf of US Senator Mike DeWine (R) because they purportedly wanted “to reduce [national party] financial support for his race and divert party money to other embattled Republican Senators.” The angry denials from GOP leaders came swiftly, as the party claimed it would pour millions of money into Ohio to support DeWine and the embattled Ohio Repubican ticket. It turns out those denials were false. According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, RNC Spokesman Aaron McLear on Thursday said the party will continue “on-the-ground” efforts in support of DeWine — but he also confirmed the national party “will not be on the air in the final week of Mike DeWine’s campaign, canceling its [TV] ad reservations throughout Ohio.” In other related news, it appears the NRSC and the RNC have also largely given up on US Senator Conrad Burns (R-MT) — as The Missoulian newspaper reported a few days ago that the national party has not spent a dime on TV or radio spots on behalf of Burns since August 7.

CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT PIONEER BASHES BUSH & CURRENT GOP LEADERS.
Vegteran conservative political consultant Richard Viguerie — an early Ronald Reagan political ally — is credited with being the father of the sophisticated direct mail campaigns for both political fundraising and persuasion. He is also credited with being an influential pioneer in the modern American conservative movement that came to power in the 1970s and 1980s. That’s why Viguerie’s latest message is so unexpected. Viguerie is now out with a new book, Conservatives Betrayed, blasting President Bush and the current Republican congressional leadership. “The big-spending, high-deficit, morally-deficient Republican Party hasn’t anything to offer conservatives except Halloween scare tactics about the Democrats. But since the GOP majority in Congress has engaged in an unprecedented spending spree, conservatives know that Democrats cannot be any worse and that divided government may lead to less spending … Trying to frighten conservatives by yelling ‘Nancy Pelosi’ and ‘Harry Reid’ won’t work this time,” explains Viguerie. He touts the need for a platform anchored by support for a balanced budget amendment, the banning of budget earmarks, further tax cuts, and the “appointment of many more Reagan-type conservatives, rather than big-business establishment Republicans.” Viguerie isn’t becoming soft on the Dems, but he thinks the current GOP leadership is risking the destruction of all the conservative gains won by the “Reagan Revolution.”

FREE SPEECH ZONE.
The US-backed special criminal tribunal in Baghdad recently moved up the announcement date for the verdict and sentence from the first trial of deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to November 5. The US midterm elections are just two days later. Coincidence? Does the White House really think a death sentence for Saddam will win them more votes in key swing districts? Hmmm.
